Our Work

The documentation of our collective histories using oral history, photography and auto ethnography.

Autoethnography is a method of qualitative inquiry that unites autobiography (telling about one’s life) and ethnography (studying culture) by utilizing lived experience as evidence with which to explore cultural phenomena.

Autoethnographers understand that just as critical exploration of culture can illuminate one’s lived experiences as part of that culture, our research and inquiry can shape us just as much as we shape it.

It gives the subject a voice, the opportunity to speak from a first-person “I” perspective.

The Art of Making Tea

May the smoothness of the raw shea butter remind you of the first time your cheek touched your mother’s chest. May the subtle sweet aroma remind you of kisses and cuddles, and laughter and joy. May you find lovers and friends willing to rub raw shea butter into your beautiful melanated skin. May we whisper incantations of beauty, safety, peace and reciprocity. May we not be afraid to accept care in all its forms. May all of us melanated sisters in community experience a softness.
Soft, Healing, evocative, anointing RAW. Let’s be raw together

Poetry

The aroma of breadfruit billows from the chimney calling all relatives to gather. They come with hands wrapped around stews of significance. Ackee & salt fish. Corn beef, onions, & bell peppers, pear (avocado)
